KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Sipho Hlomuka officially opened the state-of-the-art, R14-million Ugu Fire and Rescue Centre in Port Shepstone on Tuesday this week.

This is phase two of the disaster centre which will support all municipalities under the Ugu District. MEC Hlomuka stated that this was crucial as it is the summer season, where floods and other natural disasters are expected to happen in the district.

He said the newly built centre will be key in assisting the municipality manage disasters.

“The state-of-the-art fire and rescue centre will be manned 24/7 by competent teams that will be serving our communities here on the South Coast throughout the festive season,” said Mr Hlomuka.

After opening the centre, the MEC along with Ugu mayor Cllr Sizwe Ngcobo and local municipality mayors handed over eight houses to families in different areas whose houses were damaged as a result of floods that happened last year.

The construction of the houses was made possible through the intervention of Absa which donated R800 000.

The MEC also urged drivers to be careful while on the road due to heavy rains being currently experienced.
