Animal organs dumped in Marburg

Residents called the Herald frustrated about the dumping which is alleged to have taken place at night while they were asleep.

The appalling sight of offal and leftover food dumped at the end of Dairy Road in Marburg Ext 14 this week, has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal dumping on the South Coast.

Discarded food has outraged Marburg residents.

Residents called the Herald frustrated about the dumping which is alleged to have taken place at night while they were asleep.

“The flies and the smell of rotting meat are a health hazard, and this is not the first time this has happened. I am frustrated as we pay high rates and everyone is silent about this,” said an angry resident.

Councillor Ajith Rajaram said illegal dumping is a huge, ongoing problem not only in Marburg, but in-and-around Port Shepstone. He added that he has many practical ideas he would like to pitch to council on how to stop it.

Simon April, spokesman of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said Marburg in particular remains a hotspot for illegal dumping of carcasses, which the municipality cannot process via landfill sites, as they are not equipped to deal with such.

He confirmed that this particular complaint had been attended to.

“I appeal to the community to report illegal dumping, which ends up costing the municipality, and by extension the community,” said Mr April.
