Beloved doctor Gerald Baldrey is mourned

He made an invaluable contribution to the community

The Rotary Club of Port Shepstone has lost a true Rotarian and a wonderful friend.

Dr Gerald Baldrey, who died recently, was an active member of the club for many years and was very recently named a Paul Harris Fellow.

He was loved by many and highly respected by family, fellow Rotarians, friends and colleagues.

The medical fraternity will also miss the commitment, enthusiasm and care with which he served the community.

Gerald was born in Middlesex, United Kingdom on November 16, 1946. His family moved to Zimbabwe when he was 11-years-old.

He matriculated and then qualified as a medical officer in 1971 in Harare.

He worked at various hospitals and healthcare facilities in Zimbabwe, Pietermaritzburg and Tanzania before finally settling down at the Thuthuzela Care Centre at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital in 2007.

Under his leadership, the Thuthuzela Centre was put on the map.

They received many accolades and awards for being recognised as one of the best care centres in South Africa.

The club and the community have both lost a selfless, wise and caring human being.

Gerald was a man of great integrity and substance who lived a balanced life.

He was an excellent storyteller who would relate his many and varied life experiences, which often ended with an amusing and special anecdote.

He was also a very keen listener to whomever needed an ear. It was a great privilege to know Gerald.

He will be remembered as an authentic man who lived by the Rotary Four-Way Test. He will be missed.
