OPINION: ‘Left to die on the roadside’
Pluto had been hit by a car and was left injured on the side of the road.
DEAR Editor
On my way home from work a few months ago I spotted a dog and stopped to give him a snack.
The following day, and on subsequent days thereafter, he waited for me at same spot and the same time.
I named him Pluto.
More dogs joined him and I would meet them every afternoon to feed them.
This routine has been going for a few months.
Sadly, Pluto wasn’t at the usual spot on Monday this week.
However, when I stopped I heard a howl and saw a dog lying on grass – it was Pluto, injured!
He had been hit by a car.
He was dehydrated and when I tried to pick him up to put him on my lap he was in a lot of pain and unable to move.
I contacted Lazer 911 and within minutes Carmelo Serranté arrived.
Lazer’s control room helped me to get hold of the Lower South Coast SPCA, who sent out field officer Cher Allan.
While on my lap, Pluto managed to eat some of his favourite food, drink some water and even wag his tail.
I said a prayer and kissed him goodbye.
The SPCA contacted me that same night to say he had internal injuries and broken legs. Pluto had to be put down.
Thank you to everyone who helped that day.
God placed me there for a reason and I know in my heart that Pluto knew he was loved and cared for before he left earth.
We all have a heart, let’s use it to share the love.
