Bowlers roll up for those in need

Members of Margate Bowling Club have played a major role in assisting those in need.
With the festive season in full swing (despite the Covid-19 limitations) the spirit of giving back was evident among the bowlers.
The club recently held its annual Christmas lunch which also served as a fundraiser, with a donation of food packages being handed over to a local charity, Tent City.
Tent City currently provides a home and shelter to 110 people and 22 children.
It was founded four years ago, in Margate Extension 3.
Tent City then moved to the road not far from Margate police station, before finally settling on a farm in Southbroom.
The organisation aims to help those who have fallen on hard times, by giving them a safe place to stay, warm, clean bedding, a shower and a plate of food.
Margate BC has always been ready to serve and give back to the community and has been doing so for many years.
Club president Lance Marshall said all members were asked to donate non-perishable items.
Tent City founders, Eugene and Alet Saunders, were at the lunch to receive the generous donation on behalf of Tent City residents.
They expressed their appreciation and gratitude.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude. I don’t think the bowlers realise what this means to us. It’s people like them who help Alet and I continue doing the work we do,” said Eugene.
The couple was struck with tragedy some years ago when they lost everything they had and had to fend for themselves.
“We were on the streets in Durban, Cape Town, Durban and other parts of the country. We returned to the coast and moved in with my son, who was living in Extension 3,” said Alet.
“We eventually found jobs and slowly our lives got back on track again.”
