Puppy steals show at CHOC run

It's a stunning piece of real estate on which to run and when the weather plays the game, which it did, it makes for a wonderful day out.

The annual CHOC run, a fundraiser for children with cancer, is generally well supported and it was the same again this year, despite the Covid-19 restrictions, with 90 people taking part.

One of these was Adeline Jacobs, who ran in ‘virtually’ in Kathu in the Cape, where she was visiting her sister.

The CrossFit Wild Coast competitors included (back, from left) Nick Pinnoy, Orion, Marius Burgh, Luke Davis, Michelle Wridgway, Madrie Burgh, Angie Robertson, Gary Wridgway, Natassja Bester and Lauren Gaze; with Rebecca Nagel (and Puppy), Jarryd Charlton, Lynette Bester, Reinette van Zyl and Cayli van Breda in front.

It’s organised by Deborah Berridge and held in Uvongo, with the staggered start and finish near the pier on Lilliecrona Boulevard.

A special guest of sorts stole the show this holiday season, none other than Puppy, a friendly dog owned by Rebecca Nagel of Margate, who was part of the CrossFit Wild Coast team.

Enjoying the day are (from left) Nadine Young, organiser Deborah Berridge and Linda Torlage.

Rebecca is wheelchair-bound (after a motor vehicle accident some years ago) but this hasn’t stopped her living an active lifestyle.

She took Puppy along for the event and by all accounts he seemed to behave himself.

“I’ve had him for about five years, adopting him from someone who didn’t have a big enough garden and people to play in with. He runs next to me and drags me along. He usually requires an ice-cream from the kiosk half way through but we skipped it this year.”

When asked about the name, Rebecca explained that ‘when we adopted him, that was his name, so we kept it’.

Another runner overcoming the odds was Judy Smith, who is blind. She had Jayne Munro piloting her around the route.
