Pump station set alight

The most severely affected areas are in wards 12, 13, 14 and 16, namely Qwabe, Foksin, Mlamula, Morrison and parts of u-Deke and Baphumule.

Infrastructure critical to water supply has been vandalised again, this time in Mthwalume.

Ugu spokesman France Zama said electrical cables from an Eskom transformer supplying the Ixobho water pump station had been stolen and that a case has been opened with the police.

The most severely affected areas are in wards 12, 13, 14 and 16, namely Qwabe, Foksin, Mlamula, Morrison and parts of u-Deke and Baphumule.

Mr Zama said a few days after the cables had been stolen, the vandals struck again, destroying what was left of the pump station’s electrical panel by burning it down completely.

Technicians are busy with the restoration of the vandalised infrastructure.

“The municipality views these criminal acts directed at its infrastructure at the expense of service delivery as seeking to render the supply of water in the district into a state anarchy,” said Mr Zama.

“Relief measures are being put in place to supply water to the affected areas through tankers,” he said.

He added that Ugu would continue to work tirelessly toward responding to the numerous outcries regarding water and sanitation services coming from ratepayers and residents, while also dealing with matters concerning the safety and security of the infrastructure.
