Man arrested in connection to water pump station being vandalised

A few days after the cables had been stolen, the vandals struck again, destroying what was left of the pump station’s electrical panel by burning it down completely.

A man (37) appeared in Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court this week in connection with the theft of electrical cables and vandalising of the Ixobho water pump station.

Ugu spokesman France Zama recently reported that electrical cables from an Eskom transformer supplying the Ixobho water pump station had been stolen and that a case had been opened with the police.

Shortly after that incident, infrastructure at the pump station was vandalised, which affected water supply in Mthwalume.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said Msinsini Saps had received and responded to information about the case.

Detectives arrested the man, who was found to be in possession of copper cables at his residence in Kwa-Ndelu.

“He was charged with being possession of suspected stolen property, theft and malicious damage to property,” said Capt Mpinge.
