Rising surf star Simo Mkhize breaks leg, needs community’s support

The year has gotten off on a rocky start for surfer Simo Mkhize.

Up-and-coming surfer Simo Mkhize (23) from Umzumbe has broken his leg in two places.

This is a massive blow to the young and talented surfer who has recently landed sponsorships with O’Neill, Rydlandsea, Maisch Fins and Graham Smith Surfboards.

Simo has been busy – last year he traveled the West Coast with Amandla Surf Foundation, and was also involved in a CNN documentary shot by Peter Rudden and Michael Cross.

The documentary, which features Simo, is expected to be released later this year.

He is also captain of the Umzumbe Surf Riders’ Club.

Nicolette Tilley, who has assisted Simo with his surfing career, said he was in a lot of pain.

She has urged the community to send support and encouragement his way.

Nicolette said Simo, who also works as a lifeguard at Umzumbe main beach, will be out of action for a few weeks.

“It’s going to be a grueling four weeks of healing, physio and mental strength, but if anyone is capable of conquering a challenge, it’s him!” – Nicolette Tilley

She explained that he was taken to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

He is going to get a second opinion from a doctor, in the event he needs an operation.

“If he needs to have an operation, he needs to have it now, not in four weeks’ time,” she added.

“If anyone can help in any way with vitamins and collagen to support his healing, and perhaps a fan to keep him cool, it would be greatly appreciated,” she said.

Nicolette said Simo was going to need physiotherapy and she was going to start a Crowdfund.

“If anyone can assist it would be a massive boost to help get him back into the water.”
