DJ 101 flies high with ‘I Am Free’
The single featured local vocalist sensation, Slwane.
DJ 101 has been described as a juggernaut in the South Coast music and entertainment scene.
He recently had reason to celebrate when his latest single ‘I Am Free’ hit number one on Gagasi FM’s GMS Dance Show chart on December 29.
The single was released in late June last year.
DJ 101 (real name Bongani Zakuza) has worked with the likes of Sphiwe Jula of SJ music in production.
The single featured local vocalist sensation, Slwane.
‘I Am Free’ made its debut on the charts on December 1 last year.
“I was excited, because when I checked the charts the song was at number six and, then, all of a sudden, it shot straight to number one, so it was like a miracle. To jump five places straight to the top was a bit overwhelming,” said DJ 101.
While it was his first song to make the charts on Gagasi FM, DJ 101 has had other songs chart on other radio stations from previous albums.
For example, ‘Suparawkuz Volume 1’ received lot of airplay on Ukhozi FM.
“I believe with the support of all the listeners, especially on the South Coast, we can keep it going,” he said.
DJ 101 said ‘I Am Free’ was released as a form of self expression and as a tribute to his favourite style of music – deep house with a dance element and vibe.
“One has to understand that as a deejay you must express who you are as a person. Most of us play for the masses, as opposed to revealing our true selves through the music we enjoy playing, and executing what we want to achieve through our skill,” he said.
“You find that you may end up playing music that isn’t even your favourite genre, which will lead to a totally different following. ‘I Am Free’ falls within the deep house bracket but still has a tempo that will get your feet moving, yet still make lyrical sense.”
