Service delivery projects set to roll out
The projects include the re-gravelling of roads such as Dexter Road (Ward 16) and Gumede-Majola Road (ward 14) in Amandawe and Nkampula Road (ward 3) in Dududu.
Umdoni Municipality’s mayor, Councillor Sibongile Khathi, has begun rolling out several sod turning ceremonies this week for service delivery projects in various respective wards while simultaneously introducing the service providers to the benefiting communities.
The projects include the re-gravelling of roads such as Dexter Road (Ward 16) and Gumede-Majola Road (ward 14) in Amandawe and Nkampula Road (ward 3) in Dududu.
“These extremely deteriorated access roads will be receiving a long-awaited makeover and the municipality will be injecting an amount of R7 481 000 to fund the re-gravelling,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni communications manager.
Dexter Road, under Cllr Mbali Cele, entails the re-gravelling of a 1.8km road.
This project includes roadbed preparation, earthworks, storm water drainage system, v-drains, gravel wearing course, road signage and clearing and grubbing and is expected to be completed in four months time.
The re-gravelling of the 2.36km Gumede-Majola Road, under the deputy mayor Cllr Siyabonga Khwela, includes a new 200mm layer of wearing coarse, 150mm concrete sections for 326 metres, minor intersections and storm water pipe crossing expected to be completed in six months.
Lastly, 1km of Nkampula Road under Cllr Bonginkosi Mngadi will be redone within a period of four months including 150mm gravel base, laying of 600mm diameter concrete storm water pipes, pipe crossings with two headwalls, one inlet, one outlet and wing walls, construction of side storm water drains lines with gabion mattresses and installation of road signs.
Attention will also be paid to the Pat Cele Community Hall in ward 2, Mbungulu Community Hall in ward 6, Kwalembe sports field in ward 1 and Bhadane sports field in ward 4.
“The community, guided by their wards councillors, will establish a Project Steering Committee which will monitor the projects in their areas,” added Ms Cele.
“Over and above the much-needed community development the upgrade of road infrastructure is bringing to these communities, these projects will also create temporary employment for locals.”
Due to Covid-19 protocols, only a limited number of attendees will be permitted at each sod turning.
