Bodybuilders braces for title defence
This year isn't looking all that promising either, although hopefully by later in the year things may be better.
Bodybuilding champion, Thandazane Ntsimbi, is looking forward to a return to competition this year, when it comes.
He lives in Ramsgate and works as a personal trainer at Superbodies gym in Margate.
Thandazane is the reigning South African champion in the IFBB’s men’s light middleweight (Under 80kg) division, having won the title in 2019.
Unfortunately, no competitions were held last year due to Covid-19.
This year isn’t looking all that promising either, although hopefully by later in the year things may be better.
Ironically, Thandazane had been planning on taking a gap year, anyway.
“My plan was to compete in the Arnold Classic this year. Last year I didn’t compete because I took a gap year, it wouldn’t have made a difference if there hadn’t been the pandemic,” he said.
“As there were no competitions, I guess that makes me champion two years in a row,” he joked.
This year he is looking to a pro card – a card proving you have put in the work and competed at amateur level competitions and won.
He needs this to be able to compete in the Arnold Classic.
“It’s the biggest show in Africa,” he said.
The plan is to return to competing in the KwaZulu-Natal Championships and then, of course, the South African Championships, in order to obtain the pro card.
He also has his eye on competing in the Mr Olympia competition, well, in the 212 pound division – that’s for those under 100kg.
“Competing in the Mr Olympia main division is a bit unrealistic, those guys are really, really big,” he said.
