Much loved doctor will be greatly missed
It was in this capacity that he made such an immense contribution to the lives of countless people over nearly four decades.
Condolences have poured in much loved general practitioner, Dr Gerhard Morkel of Margate, who died recently.
He was born in Vereeniging on May 10, 1953. During his schooling career at Höerskool Vereeniging, he excelled in rugby, cricket, swimming and athletics.
In 1970, he earned junior Springbok colours for discus throw and the following year was named head boy.
After completing high school, he studied medicine at the University of Pretoria, where he completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees in 1978.
He married Gerda the same year and then completed his two years of military service in Hoedspruit.
The couple had three children, Simone, Gerhard and Karla.
In 1981 he joined and then took over the late Dr Solly Feinberg’s medical practice in Margate, where he worked for 39 years.
It was in this capacity that he made such an immense contribution to the lives of countless people over nearly four decades.
Dr Morkel had a passion for serving his community, as well as a keen interest in wildlife, conservation and sport.
He was loved for his quick wit, dry sense of humour and his compassionate spirit. He will be greatly missed.
