No stranger to fashion shows and beauty competitions, Mimi Qatsi (27) of Kwanzimakwe, near Margate was recently crowned the South African Ultimate Top Model.
“The competition aims to uplift youngsters, gives them a platform to showcase their talent and to get them recognition,” said Mimi.
She made certain she was well prepared for the judges.
“I made sure I had excellent knowledge of current affairs in the country and about issues faced by youngsters.”
The competition was held online due to Covid-19.
“We had Instagram interviews and discussions. The most challenging was to ask South Africa to vote online. By the grace of God, they voted for me and I had huge support,” said Mimi.
From the initial 16 contestants, Mimi made it to the top three and was eventually crowned the winner.
“It was absolutely amazing taking the title,” she said.
Some of the other beauty titles that she has bagged along the way are: Miss Face of Johannesburg, Miss Swinton College, Miss Coastal, Miss Southcoast Mall and Face of Continent Africa Ambassador.
Mimi started entering competitions at the age of 16 and has participated in local fashions shows from a young age.
Her mother and sister motivated her to enter and also accompanied her to modelling shows in the Eastern Cape.
Mimi also started SA Models Foundation to coach upcoming models from the South Coast.
“There is too much exploitation in the industry. I want to make sure that the youngsters are safe as our young girls are being trafficked. I am the bridge that will help them cross over onto the right path in the modelling industry,” she said.
Mimi is also a presenter at Radio Sunny South, where she co-hosts the breakfast show every Saturday from 6am to 10am.
“I love presenting and enjoy engaging with people.”
Her advice to youngsters thinking of following in her footsteps is to be yourself in everything you do.
“If you give the world who you are, you will never be stopped, the world is your stage.”
Mimi is also venturing into the world of film and has been cast in a movie. She will be attending the shoot in Johannesburg next week.
