Margate constables arrest knife-wielding cellphone thief

Bail was denied and the case was postponed to January 25.

Swift response from Margate Saps constables Vukani Sithole and Phendukani Sokhela last Saturday resulted in the arrest of a man (24) in connection with a house robbery at Dennis Road in Margate Ext 3.

The man was charged for house robbery and appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday (18th).

Bail was denied and the case was postponed to January 25.

Police spokesman Sergeant Sibu Ncane said it’s alleged that the occupant of the house was in the bedroom sleeping when he was awoken by a strange noise in the room.

“He woke up and saw the man already inside the house. He shouted at him and when the intruder drew a knife he retreated. The intruder then fled. The man then chased him after noticing that his cellphone was missing from the charger,” said Sgt Ncane.

He reported it to the police who followed up.

Margate station commander Brigadier William Slabbert commended the constables for the quick arrest.
