Well-known snake rescuer, Miguel de Fonseca was alerted to not one, but two green mamba sightings in Pennington last weekend.

The first callout was from a man who spotted a mamba in his kitchen at home. The second was of another green mamba spotted under a bakkie near Pennington.

Miguel and his wife Micaela responded to the first callout, but could not locate the snake in the kitchen. They informed the man that they had another callout to go to nearby and would return once the snake is spotted again.

When they arrived at the second location and saw that the snake under the bakkie was sitting still, Miguel called fellow snake rescuer Nick Evans and his camera crew to assist and film the catch. While Nick and his crew made their way to the mid-South Coast, Miguel and Micaela monitored the mamba.

When Nick arrived, the snake had already moved to the chassis of the vehicle. Miguel and Nick got under the bakkie and tried taking it out from inside the chassis. They tried poking the snake to make it come out but that didn’t seem to work.

The duo decided to use a hose pipe to flush it out with water. Although this still didn’t make the stubborn snake move, Miguel and Nick were able to cool down for a little while with all the cold water from the hose splashing on them.

Once again they tried to get the snake to move by poking it around and this time it worked. Nick was able to grab the snake by its head using his snake tongs, but the rest of the body was still stuck inside.

Miguel slowly pulled at the snake and then quickly grabbed it with his tongs. After removing the snake from the bakkie, Miguel held its body while Nick kept hold of its head for bystanders to see and take pictures.

They also used this opportunity to educate everyone about snakes, especially children.

Soon after, the man from the first callout reached out to Miguel to inform him that the mamba was spotted in the kitchen again so Miguel together with Nick got in their vehicles to return to the house. After searching every nook and cranny, nothing was found. The team left and went to release the bakkie mamba and Nick and his crew parted ways from Miguel and Micaela.

A short while after, Miguel received a call from the Pennington man saying that the disappearing mamba made a reappearance on his patio and wrapped itself around a chair arm rest.

The man sent photos and a video of the snake and Miguel could clearly see that it was in fact another green mamba, but this time it was a juvenile.

The de Fonsecas rushed back to the house for the third time, and were finally able to catch it. Miguel was thanked by the local community for his assistance and can be contacted at 072-6123218.
