Vishay Singh case: Accused denied bail

Vishay Singh (22) of Palmview remains in serious condition after he was allegedly driven over by two vehicles.

The incident occurred on January 9 outside Mr Singh’s residence at around 11pm.

According to Mr Singh’s sister, Vashna Moolchand, he sustained serious injuries including multiple fractures, brain damage and internal bleeding.

Mr Singh, who serves in the South African National Defence Force, is currently in a private military hospital where doctors are performing procedures on him.

Two men, Reevek Ramlall (35) and Durell Govender (24) were arrested on January 11 and are facing charges of attempted murder after they allegedly drove over Mr Singh outside his residence in Palmview.

The accused appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on January 19 and again on January 21 for their bail hearing, where they denied the allegations against them in their sworn affidavits.

Application for bail was served before Magistrate Thandeka Fikeni, who denied the application.

The accused were transported to Westville Prison where they will await their next court appearance.

On both occasions, concerned family and community members of Mr Singh picketed outside the court claiming that they hoped justice would be served.

Mrs Moolchand said that there has been no improvement in Mr Singh’s condition and that doctors are doing what they can.

“The doctors say that his injuries are bad and will take a long time to heal. The rest is up to God to perform a miracle and heal him completely” she said.

Today (28th) marks 19 days that Mr Singh has been in this condition and he is yet to regain consciousness.

She added that the family are trying to navigate through this difficult time by taking each day as it comes, and urge people to keep Mr Singh in their prayers.
