Always to the rescue… super Sarel
The first call out of the day was to help catch a boomslang in Port Edward.
Snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe, and his occasional assistant and photographer Paul Crook had a rather busy Friday last week.
The first call out of the day was to help catch a boomslang in Port Edward.
This was the fourth boomslang he has caught on the same property, which housed a number of cottages.
Sarel said they arrived to discover staff throwing stones at the snake, which was in a lemon tree.
The snake disappeared and, after a long search, one of the tenants emerged to inform them it was in her cottage.
Sarel said that luckily, the snake was unharmed and reminded people that ‘keeping an eye on it’ did not mean that throwing stones was necessary or even effective.
Later in the day they were called out to Munster, for what Sarel described as the ‘catch of the day’ – a black mamba measuring more than three metres.
This one was hiding out in a store room.
It’s the fourth black mamba Sarel has caught in the same store room in the last three years.
