I welcome this new month of February after 973 days of January! This was sent to me by a local and is the absolute best yet. “My work colleague, taking her normal early morning walk (mask and all) happens to stop to remove a stone from inside her takkie. She’s on the pavement at the beach. A female cop, sitting in her vehicle, motions by hand for my colleague to approach and asks her what she’s doing, to which my colleague, replies ‘what does it look like I’m doing?’

Well, says the cop, you’d better move on, you’re not allowed to look at the sea.” So people, there you have it! A new Covid-19 rule in Scottburgh: no looking at the sea. This was written before the ‘family meeting’ and thankfully beaches have since been opened. That same person raised a query about the long, mostly mask-less, queues which are a daily occurrence at the post office.

My heart goes out to those people, it really does. But with the dangers of the virus, there should be far stricter adherence to Covid-19 protocols. Are there authorities who care enough to rectify the situation?

Maybe Saps or post office management? There must be someone who has the authority to create order and safety.

Anyway, just when the community was in despair about the road between the Kelso Bridge and the fourway stop at Barracuta Bend and Dolphin Drive, Richard Irwin and his team at R&M Construction stepped up. Again. They are simply the best.

Due to the fact that the Department of Transport has not done the repairs on the R102 near the library, and the serious risk it imposes for a head-on collision, our ever-ready and willing R&M Construction team, assisted by members of PCW (for traffic management) put in a temporary fill.

* An emergency Covid-19 unit is being set up in Umzinto as doctors are overwhelmed, with many patients needing oxygen. Assistance is required in setting up this facility. We currently need volunteers to assist in logistics and nursing. Contributions in cash or kind will be appreciated for setting up this unit. Patients will only be admittied via a doctor’s referral. * Self in Aksie advises that of the 31 families in Pennington the community so generously supported with donations to food parcels, there are still eight families, including four young children, which are in dire need of emergency food support. The community is asked to please help provide essential food to them by donating non-perishable food to the PCW trolley at OK Foods. You may also donate funds to Self in Aksie, which distributes these food parcels free of charge, meaning all money is used for food. Find Self in Aksie on Facebook.
