Shirley on steri-drive for SPCA
This was done to curb the breeding of unwanted animals in order to focus on the overwhelming number of shelter animals already in the care of the society.
Shirley Elliott, the Lower South Coast SPCA board’s secretary, will be celebrating her 85th birthday on February 28.
However, she is more interested in fulfilling a goal SPCA marketing manager Dalene Erasmus, who died last month, had for her last year.
For Dalene’s 60th birthday early last year she had 60 animals sterilised.
This was done to curb the breeding of unwanted animals in order to focus on the overwhelming number of shelter animals already in the care of the society.
Back then, she encouraged Shirley, who has worked as the society’s board secretary on a voluntary basis for many years, to embark on a similar steri-drive for her 85th.
For this reason Shirley is appealing to the community to help with fundraising to make this a reality, in memory of her friend and for the benefit of the animals.
“The aim is to raise enough funds to sterilise 85 cats and/or dogs, especially for lower income homes which cannot afford to pay to have their pets sterilised,” she said.
She’s more than half way there, with the society having managed to already raise the money for 50 sterilisations.
Carla Steenkamp, SPCA vice-chairman, encouraged the community to play its part.
“The cost of sterilisation is R500 per animal, but no contribution towards this cause is be too small,” she said.
