Captain’s knock from Bouic sees Skzn clinch tight win
Southern KZN is playing in the A league, with the intention of gaining promotion back into the premier division next year.
After a very long wait to play league again, the Southern KZN golf team started the new season in promising fashion with a 4,5-3,5 win over Durban Country Club ‘2’ in Durban last Sunday.
Southern KZN is playing in the A league, with the intention of gaining promotion back into the premier division next year.
Due to Covid-19 there is no foursomes this year, so it was a straight singles shoot-out on a blistering hot morning.
Kai Hielckert (Port Shepstone CC) made his debut for the team at just 16 years old.
The Kearsney College Grade 11 has improved rapidly over the past few years but lost to wily campaigner and Durban CC team captain Paul Brown 3/2.
“Putting wasn’t great and I probably didn’t need to use driver so often,” he observed.
He did smash one down the first, into a breeze, when just about everyone else was popping an iron or a hybrid carefully down the fairway.
Chris Zietsman (Selborne Park) has relocated to the province and is certainly no stranger to tournament and league golf, having played in numerous IPT events.
However, he was a little off his usual game and lost 2/1 to Marc Proctor.
“Two birdies, seven bogeys – can’t win games like that,” he lamented.
Newly elected captain Jean-Marc Bouic (Selborne Park) played a captain’s knock of some note, winning his match against Craig Allan 2/1 after being four down after five holes.
“Was a bit out of alignment, too open, with the putting but once I squared things up I was okay,” he said.
At number five veteran David Rush (Southbroom) was three up after 10 and looking comfortable but three birdies from his opponent Luke van der Berg saw that match squared and Luke eventually grabbed a vital lead on the 17th, and finished it off on the iconic 18th, a drivable par four.
Another veteran, Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) was rock-solid on his return to Skzn colours, beating Grant Lister-James 4/3.
The crucial match was between Mitchel Hampson (Umdoni Park) and Ian King, with the powerfully built Mitch earning the half which would secure the overall win.
Before that, Jack Cubitt (Umdoni Park) had won his game against Steve Cullen 4/3, while Jason Gilliver (Umdoni Park) showed why he is one of the top three players in the province with a resounding 6/5 win over Ashwin Krishen.
The next league game is against Bluff National away on April 18.
