24 homes destroyed in fire at Masinenge

A gas stove is believed to be the cause of the fire.

A fire ravaged the informal settlement of Masinenge in Margate this evening, that saw more than 40 people lose their homes.

It is believed the fire started at 5:30pm in one of the resident’s houses as they attempted to switch on a gas stove to cook.

It is also believed that the gas may have been left on and a spark caused the fire to start.

Members of the Ray Nkonyeni Fire Rescue and Disaster Management were at the scene putting out the fire.

An official took the names of all those who lost their homes.

“Roughly 40 people have lost their houses, and we are still counting, so we are not sure as to what the exact figure is as you can see we are still taking names” said Miriam Luninka, secretary of the Ward.

No injuries were sustained by those affected by the fire.
