Police in shoot-out with hijackers
They then forced the Mr Sichomo to drive his Ford Figo to Umlazi where he was asked to jump out and the suspects drove away.
A shoot-out occurred between police and hijackers after Umkomaas SAPS Crime Prevention Unit members responded to information of a hijacked car that was spotted at Umgababa last Thursday.
Constables E John and TM Magcaba found the vehicle fitting the description of the hijacked car with several suspects inside
“On seeing the police the suspects alighted the hijacked vehicle and fired shots towards the police,” said communications officer, Warrant Officer Ajay Thawnarian.
Police returned fire and the suspects fled into nearby bushes.
No-one was injured during the shoot-out.
“The vehicle was hijacked earlier in the day when the victim, Goodenough Sichomo was parked on the N2 freeway. Three men approached his car and they produced firearms and knives,” said Captain Thawnarian.
They then forced the Mr Sichomo to drive his Ford Figo to Umlazi where he was asked to jump out and the suspects drove away.
Umkomaas SAPS station commander, Colonel QS Mabida commended the police officers for their bravery and recovery of the hijacked vehicle.
