Cooler box project reaps rewards for Margate Saps

Margate Saps recently held an awards ceremony where station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert, handed over trophies to acknowledge the members who contributed to a safer festive season during the months of December last year to February 2021.
Brig. Slabbert initiated a project called Operation Cooler Box, often a numbers of drownings.
“The consumption of alcohol can be a contributing factor in this incidents and therefore the focus was to ensure the non-consumption of alcohol on beaches and in public,” he said.
“The reason for the awards is to say thank you. We’ve made a little trophy for each month, where we will put on the names of each winner and at the end of the year we’ll determine who the overall winner is. There’s a voucher that goes with it. It’s to say thank you for what they’ve done in our community.”
The February winner was Warrant Officer Vasuthaven Pillay, who received a trophy and a R1000 voucher for his group.
Other groups, led by Warrant Officer Sibusiso Ngidi and Captain Perumal Naicker, who also received trophies and R1000 voucher per group.
The groups consisted mostly of new constables.
From December 2020 to February 2021 the police members engaged in this operation managed to confiscate 75 cooler boxes of liquor, and also made 227 arrests, followed by 529 arrests in January and 578 in February.
Brig. Slabbert extended much gratitude to all stakeholders, including security companies, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement, business owners and the community at large.
