Bags of love at the Village
Maxie and Zanell appealed to family and friends from all over the world, who sent in donations which contributed to the purchase of the bags and gifts.
Maxie Liebenberg (85) is a Hibiscus Heights resident at the Hibiscus Retirement Village in Margate.
During the country’s hard lockdown, Maxie witnessed the Village’s nursing staff, healthcare workers and other essential workers risk their lives everyday by potentially being exposed to the virus.
“While I was comfortable and safe in my flat, all of you were out there making sure that we were okay and would constantly check on us, putting your own lives on the line,” said Maxie while addressing the staff.
Taking this into consideration, Maxie began brainstorming ways to show her appreciation to the nursing staff who worked tirelessly throughout the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the help of her daughter, Zanell Lewis, Maxie gifted around 40 goodie bags to the matron and nursing staff of Hibiscus Heights on Tuesday (April 6th).
Maxie and Zanell appealed to family and friends from all over the world, who sent in donations which contributed to the purchase of the bags and gifts.
The remainder of the funds were donated to frail care.
“This is a way for me to say thank you for all your sacrifices, and I hope these gifts will bring you some cheer,” said Maxie.
Maxie explained how she would often watch staff commute as early as 5am, and could not imagine having to adapt to a different life during the pandemic, as well as the changed procedures that came with it.
“You are the real heroes,” she said.
Maxie extends a heartfelt thanks to her daughter, friends and family for bringing her wish to fruition.
