Surfing groms make waves

Adam van der Merwe (Umtentweni) claimed second position in the boys U10.

It’s been a busy time for members of the Ugu Surfriders team, especially the groms.

After the recent Ugu Grommet Trials that took place at St Mike’s beach, a number took part in the 2021 Sea Harvest KZN Grommet Games at Dairy Beach in Durban.

The competition took place over two days and saw the team of over 20 young surfers compete in age groups between the ages of 10 to 16.

Leah Lepront (Scottburgh) provided one of the highlights, winning the girls U12 final. Haylie le Roux (Scottburgh) placed second.

Adam van der Merwe (Umtentweni) claimed second position in the boys U10.

Okuhle Ngcungama (Trafalgar) placed second in the boys U14 division with Daryn Palmer in third spot.

Tristan Korsten (Uvongo) secured a second place finish in the U16 age group.

Now it’s time for the second trial to take place, at Southbroom main beach this Sunday (11th) from 7.30am until around 4.30pm.

The public is welcome to come and watch the groms compete.
