Fidler in the ‘Hood: ‘Lift off’ for social scene
What a lovely way to spend an evening. Despite the heavy rains, a near full house was in attendance.
The social calendar received a major boost when the CO and I went along to the Packshed to see Barbie Meyer ‘live’ and in person.

The programme was proudly South African, the glamorous Barbie entertaining us with a page from old South Africa.
Fine food, fine wine, new (and old) friends made, too.
The CO and myself found ourselves seated next to John Naylor, his bubbly wife, Trish, from St. Mike’s, and their group of friends.
John is originally from the same neck of the woods as myself.
Fortunately, John has lost his Manchester, Lancashire, north country accent; unfortunately, I haven’t.
A new-found friendship was sealed when John invited us to share a bottle of wine with him.
Being Led Astray
The Packshed is certainly the place to meet new friends.
A few days previously I called by to confirm our paid-for reservations.
As I parked my old car, another new, but posh vehicle pulled into the adjacent parking space.
The driver was a woman, my favourite opposite sex!
One can sometimes ask the daftest questions: I somehow asked her if was she going to the Packshed?
Daft in the sense that we we were about 30 metres from the entrance.
“Yes, follow me,” she replied, “do you want me to lead you astray?” I liked this woman instantly.
I checked our reservations, everything okay.
I passed a dining table, with three people about to eat.
It was ‘her’, but with a man and a young woman sitting at the table.
The man called out: “Hey, you have been talking to my wife!”
I was going to be in for it, both in The Shed and when I got home.
The man smiled: “Take a seat, have a drink with us.” Saved by the Bell’s!
What’s In a Name?
Sephus Roux, his wife Brenda, and their daughter Megan (20), are from Fourways, Jo’burg.
They were on a last day visit to their second home in Ramsgate.
The Rouxs have been visiting the South Coast regularly for the past 25 years and consider it their home away from home.
No finer testament. I asked Megan if she was THE Meghan? “No, no!’ she replied, “I spell my name without the ‘h’!”
The newly-formed friendship called for a second round of drinks.
Finally, one for the road, so to speak, literally, mindful of my duties as a law-abiding citizen.
It was all so jolly and nice. I reported home to the CO to confess I had been led astray, promising ‘not to do it again’ (till the next time!).
I’m sure the CO’s jaw dropped in disappointment – that she will have to put up with me a little while longer.
Anyway, La Familia Roux: great to meet y’all. And here’s to the next time.
Oh, Mein Papa!
Deric Mohr, of Southbroom, had to make a family visit to Germany, to see his first grandchild, a beautiful baby girl, Albertine Liv, and lovely mother Janina, Deric’s only daughter.
Besides Albertina Liv being incubated at the time of her birth, Deric also had the dubious pleasure of being confined to barracks in his native Bavaria.
Deric, however, did manage to escape to the outside world, only to be greeted with a heavy snow blizzard.
I did ask him for a picture, perhaps wearing a T-shirt and Havaianas, but our German friend declined, saying it was too ruddy cold, or words to that effect.
Deric added that whilst it is great to visit his family in Germany, it was freezing and he is looking forward to getting back home to Southbroom.
Social Diary
Moondeckers is having its joint annual general meeting and social get-together by the light of the silvery moon at the Whale Deck Ramsgate Conservancy on Tuesday, April 27.
The AGM is from 4pm with the Moondeckers soiree kicking off at 5.30pm.
