It’s time to ‘ReThink’ the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast experience as the private sector leads the way and to re-position this paradise as a ‘must-visit’ global destination.

Did you know that the KZN South Coast has more than 58 swimming beaches and 80km of untouched coves and bays?

Here you do not pay to visit beaches, they are for free, and we have 120km of beautiful coastline to share with you.

“We have identified and highlighted the plus points of our unique destination and look forward to the continuation of unearthing the many hidden gems that the area has to offer,” says Vicky Wentzel, Director of Southern Explorer.

“Our winter climate feels like summer and you can bathe all year round.”

Sandcastle building, collecting weathered glass, beach games and water sports can be enjoyed, and there are many tidal pools for safe swimming.

Immerse yourself in the deep blue and enjoy the golden beaches that allow for safe bathing.

Lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the South Coast boasts the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in Kwa-Zulu Natal, spoiling you for choice with five out the six internationally recognised topnotch beaches, namely Marina Beach, Trafalgar, Southport, Umzumbe and Hibberdene.

Managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education and by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa, the Blue Flag programme is an eco-award given to beaches that meet strict, specific standards of excellence in safety, cleanliness, provision of amenities, environmental information and management.

Aside from the 58 beaches which make up of endless stretches of golden sand, constantly lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, there is also a myriad of gorgeous tidal pools all along the coast, for swimming and rock pools for exploration, making it an ideal seaside holiday

The first stop is Scottburgh, a laid-back seaside town that offers visitors a number of holiday activities.

The expansive Scottburgh Beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming, with tidal pools the perfect spot for young or novice swimmers.

Warm sandy beaches, swimming bays and tidal pools make Ifafa Beach a sought-after family holiday destination

Margate Beach is a family-friendly swimming destination with two tidal pools, both established in 1937, with recent renovations ensuring they remain in top condition.

These are the Walpole Bay Tidal Pool and Margate Tidal Pool which offer secure swimming conditions for young ones and those not used to marine swimming.

Rocky Bay, as the name suggests, is an idyllic destination consisting of protected beaches and rocky tidal pools which are perfect for spending the day finding marine creatures.

Days on Pumula Beach can be spent along this shoreline fishing for garrick, kob, kingfish or shad, while young children are kept busy exploring the natural tidal pools stretching all the way to Umzumbe.

Don your sunhat, slap on some suncream, pack your picnic hampers and head out for a perfect day out on any of our beautiful beaches.
