Southern Explorer gears up to recreate The Sardine Run Hotline

It’s a win-win for the netters and an even bigger win for our visitors and locals as they will now have accurate information sent out into the marketplace.

We are so excited to be leading the way, running a focused marketing campaign entitled The Greatest Shoal On Earth, using information provided by a network we have established comprising of the netters, spotters and aviation teams.

In total, we have a collective 13 netters that will be added to a Southern Explorer WhatsApp group which will allow them to work together, the idea being that once a netter spots a shoal, they cast their nets and once they have done that they message the group to advise where the sardines are.

Once this has happened we will be doing social media updates advising visitors and locals where they need to get to, in order to witness the spectacle as well as purchase sardines.

It’s a win-win for the netters and an even bigger win for our visitors and locals as they will now have accurate information sent out into the marketplace.

We will also be broadcasting with our official radio stations as well as keeping you updated through the South Coast Herald and Southern Explorer websites.

The tourism industry of KwaZulu-Natal is finally starting to capitalise on this spectacular natural phenomenon that takes place on our doorstep each year.

Air flips are available from Margate Airport.

Groups of sport divers from around the world plan trips to South Africa specifically to see the Run off the coasts of both KwaZulu-Natal and the Wild Coast (Eastern Cape).

We need to continue to promote this phenomena as it is a tourism product within itself which allows us to attract global attention.

In 2004, 93 000 calls were made to the KZN Sharks Board/East Coast Radio Sardine Run Hotline to find out the whereabouts of the sardine shoals.

The Southern Explorer Hotline will be updated regularly throughout the duration of the Run by the Southern Explorer team. Check out our socials on Facebook as we will be launching the Sardine Hotline Number within the next few days.

It’s certainly times for business unusual and we are loving conceptualising these types of creative concepts which don’t cost money – they just need to be driven by a team that is is passionate about our beautiful KZN South Coast.
