Joint effort leads to beach clean-up in Hibberdene
A concerned member of the public who was in attendance said that the lifeguards were instructed not to clean the beach as that work was reserved for RNM employees.
The Hibberdene branch of the Freedom Front (FF) Plus lived up to the true meaning of Workers’ Day when members of the party, along with members of the public and on-duty lifeguards joined forces for a beach clean-up at Hibberdene main beach last week Saturday. According to FF PR Councillor and KwaZulu-Natal vice-chairman, Rochelle Robbertze, the water issues have led to other factors such as service delivery to be overlooked.
“It’s sad that the norm in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has becomes water problems and potholes which we are getting accustomed to. We’re focusing on the water which is a huge problem yes, but while we’re sorting out those issues, we cannot neglect that there are others such as safety and service delivery,” Ms Robbertze said.

“As far as I know the lifeguards were told not to concern themselves with the state of the beach as it was the municipality’s job, they were to be offered overtime on the weekends but that has never happened,” the man said.
The clean-up saw the removal of branches of overgrown trees, the cutting of grass, picking up of litter on the beach and the emptying of dustbins.
“If you look on the sides of the road, everything is overgrown and untidy, it’s as if service delivery is not important anymore. While we’re handling other problems, we can’t neglect everything. While Ugu struggles with the water issues, RNM too needs to be held accountable,” said Pierre Joubert, chairman of the FF Hibberdene branch.
