South Coast mourns angler Jason Palmer
He quickly made a name for himself in the angling world and, in 2001, was awarded his Natal Deep Sea Angling Colours and again in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Popular angler Jason Palmer (48) was killed in a multiple-vehicle collision on the road between Estcourt and Mooi River on Monday afternoon.
He will be sorely missed by his wife Kimon and sons, Cameron (19) and Daryn (14), mom Lyn Palmer, family and friends.
Jason grew up in Pietermaritzburg and went to Carter High. After school, he moved to the South Coast when he did his apprenticeship as a boiler maker.
In his younger days, he loved surfing and travelling. While living in London, he and Kimon travelled to exotic locations like Mexico and Indonesia.
“Jason had many friends and was liked by everyone. He was extremely social and loved to be with people. He was very generous and a kind and gentle soul. He was a wonderful father to our boys,” said Kimon.
On a lighter note, Jason was nicknamed ‘George’ as he called everyone by this name so that he didn’t forget anyone’s and it became a standing joke among friends.
He was an angler of note, both deep sea and fresh water, and earned his national colours in the sport.
Jason was a very active person and also loved off-road biking, taking part in events like Matat2Pont and The Roof of Africa.
In 1994, he joined the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club, a young man ‘full of beans’.
He quickly made a name for himself in the angling world and, in 2001, was awarded his Natal Deep Sea Angling Colours and again in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Leon Garbade, Commodore of the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club said Jason was also an accomplished skipper who, in 2004 was awarded his South African Deep Sea Angling Colours as skipper.
He fished in many competitions and almost always finished with accolades.
“Jason was an extremely good friend to many, an unmatched character in our club and a great role model to all our junior anglers,” said Leon.
He spent his last weekend with everyone at the club, skippering his beloved ‘Aqua Brat’ in the interclub competition with a junior angling team.
Away from the club, Jason’s influence stretched far and wide and he was known, respected and loved by many.
“Kimon, Cameron and Daryn, thank you for sharing your husband and dad with all of us, I count myself as privileged to have known him and called him a friend. He loved you all dearly and was very proud of his boys,” said Leon.
