Cool weather during winter months makes for the prefect time to exercise outdoors.

There is so much to do on the coast for everyone in a safe environment.

* The Shoreline Challenge 2021 Series comprises a number of walks that are safe and done in a group.
The next walk is from the Ramsgate Ski-boat base to Marina Beach North on Sunday, June 6 (this may change if rivers open).
If you would like to join email Reneé Swanepoel, secretary of the Mzimkhulu Honorary Officers Group, at renee@zenos.co.za.

* If you are wanting to support rural breast cancer screenings, there is a I Love Boobies Fun Run at Lake Eland Game Reserve this Saturday, May 29.
R40 per person, registration is at 7.30am. For more information contact Cindy on 079 0311361.

* Be sure not to forget yoga at the Ramsgate Whale Deck, walks at Sweetdale Farm in Izotsha or Seaview Game Farm in Port Edward, or even a group cycle from the Burry Stander Bike Park in Umtentweni. These are some of the fantastic outdoor activity venues to visit with family or friends.

8 Tips for winter outdoor safety when exercising

1. Try to vary your route so that your routine does not become obvious to criminals.
2. Always tell someone where you are going and what time you will be back.
3. If you are carrying valuables they should be concealed. It is not advisable to head off without a cellphone.
4. Carry your ID, medical information and emergency contact information.
5. Stay alert by not talking on your phone and keeping the volume down on your earphones.
6. Don’t be distracted by strangers asking for help or directions. Even the most innocent of couples in a car could be armed robbers.
7. Wear brightly coloured clothing during the day and reflective clothing at night.
8. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you notice someone suspicious on your route, take a detour to avoid them. Be aware of being followed home. If you think you are being followed call your private security company to report it and ask them to meet you at your gate.
