Seventeen pairs of helping hands turned out for the Umtamvuna Marine Conservancy’s (UMC) International Coastal Cleanup at Silver Beach in Port Edward on September 19, making the most of a rain-free morning.

Despite the beach appearing largely litter-free, volunteers collected 14 bags of waste, mainly plastic.

UMC chairperson Renée Alcock said the efforts of regular beach walkers were evident in the relatively small amount of litter found.

“The regular beach walkers help control the amount of litter,” said Alcock.

She thanked the conservancy’s loyal supporters and welcomed newcomers who joined the cleanup.

One of the morning’s highlights was a tiny treasure found by GirTee Steenkamp – a perfect little paper nautilus shell, which brought a particularly big smile to her face.
