Rain dampens KZN junior cricket trials
Organisers improvised by having net sessions at Kingsmead.
Rain saw the first two days of the KZN U13 cricket trials washed out but all was not entirely lost.
The boys were instead put through their paces at the Dolphins Cricket indoor facility at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Stadium.
There was finally some play on Sunday when Southern KZN U13s took on Durban South at Reddam Umhlanga College.
Southerns lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.
With left-arm pacer Zibu Malamba charging in, Durban South were skittled for 64 in 16 overs.
Zibu took 3-2 in three overs with his left-arm pace proving lethal. He had support from Kiaan Reddy, who took 2-9 (3) and Asenathi Mfingwana 2-10 (1).
The other two wickets were taken by Jade Jordaan 1-6 (3) and Dian Schoeman 1-3 (1).
In reply, Southerns got off to a fast start, with an opening partnership of 48 off 5.2 overs from Shaden Ellapen and skipper Bertu van Reenen.
Shaden was out for 19 off 16 balls. Number three batsmen Declyn Cilliers, who has been in sublime form this year, was unfortunately run out for a duck.
JJ Grobler joined his captain and together they took the score past 64 and beyond, with the full 25 overs being allowed to be bowled.
Bertu made 45 off 32 before being bowled. JJ was retired when on 36 off 40 balls.
Others to make some lower order runs were Jesse Langton 18* (21), Zibu Malamba 17 (18) and Dian Schoeman 15 (17).
They eventually finished on 174-5 in 25 overs.
There will be a second round of trials, with the names of those boys chosen for this round still to be announced.
The coaches were Jayden Scholtz, Brinley de Bruin and Gershion Lawrence.
