Learners bake up a storm

The class which was free of charge aimed to enhance their skills and to help them become budding entrepreneurs in future.

Ten matric learners of St Martin De Porres Comprehensive School baked up a storm with scones and snowballs on the menu during a class in Port Shepstone last Thursday.

The class which was free of charge aimed to enhance their skills and to help them become budding entrepreneurs in future.

As the learners are hearing impaired, their teacher Sr Staff Dlamini signed the instructions for them, as they were explained by class instructor Sbonga Mthethwa from Do It Like A Chef.

“None of the learners are novices. It is an extension of a consumer-related subject at school, and an opportunity for them to learn more skills,” she said.

Sbonga wanted them to get the basics right, before they moved on to baking birthday and wedding cakes.

“The purpose of the class is that they can bake at home, start a business and it is a skill they can fall back on besides their careers,” she said.
