Man fined for illegal sand mining

He was fined R20 000 or 20 months' imprisonment

A 45-year-old man was sentenced last week in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court after he was found illegally mining river sand in the Umzumbe river on November 12, 2020.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said he was charged under the Minerals Act for not having a legal permit to mine the sand.

He was fined R20 000 or 20 months’ imprisonment.

“This sentence serves as a warning that illegal miners will be prosecuted and that our natural resources should be protected,” said Mpinge.
