Four men, aged between 25 and 30, are facing charges of carjacking and attempted murder, after five men hijacked a truck at gunpoint in Murchison last Saturday. The hijacked vehicle was driven along the freeway towards Durban.

“Police officers gave chase and attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver refused to stop. During the chase there was an exchange of gunfire. At Ifafa, the truck drove into an embankment between the north and south bound lanes. The driver fled from the truck across the freeway and into bushes,” said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

Following the shootout, the body of one suspect (30) was found in the bushes.

The truck, valued at around R300 000, was recovered.

Four other suspects were arrested and detained at Port Shepstone police station.
