Tuning In: Heart-warming moments during cold snap
Schools are back which is an interesting time for learners, educators and parents. Masks and sanitising has become the norm.
The last week of July 2021 and the coldest time I have ever experienced – other than a nightmare time spent in a snow covered Drakensberg in 2015. Never to do that again. I have reached the stage in my life where the biblical expression ‘know thyself’ counts for everything, including rigorous honesty. I am a warm-weather-summer-person, I know this now.
Schools are back which is an interesting time for learners, educators and parents. Masks and sanitising has become the norm. It is certainly a time to be concerned about health and hygiene and more especially social distancing. Vaccinations continue to be rolled out and the question needs to be asked: Once vaccinated, is one safe? I would love to hear some answers and opinions.

Extensive mopping/cleaning up operations have begun around the province and it is heart-warming to watch communities coming together to restore some type of normality and, in some places, it’s better than before. While walking the dogs on Saturday I came across a bunch of folk in Pennington North with black plastic bags, picking up litter and rubbish – hardworking, caring folk who clearly want what is best for the areas where they live.
The family meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday evening was well received. Employers and employees can now return to some type of normality. It is good that restaurants are now allowed to operate. That industry has certainly been very negatively affected.
While shopping at Scottburgh Mall on Saturday I saw a large number of army personnel. I chatted to some of them and thanked them for being with us.
They were so friendly and most of them said ‘now you will be okay’. Gratifying indeed.
Thoughts are with those people who can’t get warm, who don’t have enough food, adequate clothing and/or shelter during this intensely cold time.
I believe it is the coldest in a decade. There are a number of organisations who are involved in clothing and blankets for the underprivileged. If you need to know of any, please contact the writer.
