South Coast actors showcase talents in local movie

Local and aspiring actors from the South Coast have joined forces and decided to showcase their talents to the world by creating their own local movie, Impendulo.
Roughly three months ago, the group of budding actors sought guidance to achieve their dreams of being in a movie one day and were able to find help in Scottburgh thanks to local actor and director Bruce Gounder.

With 30 years’ of experience in the industry and from humble beginnings, Gounder did not hesitate to train the actors for bigger and brighter things as well as share insight.
“When I first met this group of passionate actors, they only wanted me to help them become extras in a movie,” he said.
“In just our first training session, I saw potential and pushed them to try for something bigger than small roles because they were brilliant and showed hunger to be in this industry, much like I did when I first started off my acting career.”
The group of actors became confident in their capabilities in no time.

One of the actors, Nduduzo Christus Ngcobo (25) wrote Impendulo in Zulu and translated it, and asked Gounder if he could help the group make the movie by being their director, to which he agreed.
Impendulo, which is being produced by Durban’s Rodeo Brothers 22 Century, is now in the process of being filmed.
Last week, the actors found themselves in Scott Street shooting several scenes directed by Gounder throughout the town such as on the sidewalks, in one of the local grocery stores and even at a pub and grill.
One of the scenes included a woman begging for money and help to support herself and new baby, to which the actress gave such a powerful performance that a few bystanders thought she required actual help, with one person even giving her some money.
The actors do not want to give too much away about the movie at this stage, but mentioned that it is extremely emotional and portrays people’s pain, suffering, deception and shows the overall ups and downs of life.

Ngcobo, the scriptwriter stated that he grew up watching many movies and television series over the years and adopted and altered many ideas to help him write this script.
“I am encouraging people, no matter where they live, even if it’s in the townships like some of our actors on set, to go for their dreams just like Bruce has encouraged us,” he said.
After being trained on technical matters, voice projection, time management, professionalism and communication with Gounder, the actors have gained a lot of knowledge and experience and are ready to produce more content in the coming months.
Gounder stated that he is expected to continue directing, amidst his other projects, and continue shooting scenes in mid-November in Mtwalume where the rest of the movie will be finished, and is closer to home for a majority of the cast.
“I am proud to see my students achieve something this big and once production of this movie is completed, people can expect to see it on TV,” said Gounder.
