Plea from SPCA at New Year as inevitable fireworks celebrations loom
The SPCA will be open from 09:00 to noon on January 1, for the collection of lost pets or to bring in stray animals.

Scott Kvalsvig, chairman of the Lower South Coast SPCA, has said the society cannot do anything about fireworks being set off over the New Year’s celebration period.
“That falls under the Saps and RNM Protection Services. It’s up to them to enforce the law,” he said.
However, he said that, like always, the SPCA committee will open the SPCA from 09:00 to noon on January 1, for the collection of lost pets or to bring in stray animals.
Scott, vice-chairman Carla Steenkamp, and operations supervisor Mike Davis will be available throughout new year’s eve, as well as inspectorate.
“Please note that we can only respond to animal related emergencies, not fireworks,” he said.

He appealed to the community to assist with the following:
1. Have a recent photo of your pet handy. Should we need to find it, we will ask security companies to assist and circulate the photo through their channels. Come in on January 1 to make sure you’re pet isn’t there. Please remember proof of ownership, vaccination booklet and money, if your dog isn’t microchipped or vaccinated.
2. If you see a stray pet, keep the pet in your garage or somewhere safe and send us a photo as well. Bring in the pet the following morning.
3. Take care of your own pets, if you know your pet is scared, get a sedative from your local vet.
4. Keep your pets in your house.
5. Play music to calm them down.
6. Wrap in blankets if needed.
“We appeal to the public to assist us during New Year’s Eve and thank the security companies that are willing to assist us,” said Scott.
