Ugu mayor to sharpen tools of service delivery

Sikhumbuzo 'Zero' Mqadi resigned as mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to take up office as mayor at Ugu District Municipality.

Ugu District’s new mayor Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi said one of the municipality’s key areas of focus will be to ensure a clean and corrupt free administration.

At his inauguration at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre recently, Mqadi also said any action that goes against the mandate of the council will not be tolerated.

Mqadi resigned as mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) just over a week ago and took up office at Ugu.
He thanked the council for an uncontested election and also said that he is willing to work with all political parties and stakeholders.

Mqadi said it was important to remember and praise the work of former mayors of Ugu, among them Mtomuhle Khawula of the IFP who was mayor in the early 2000s.

He also thanked deputy mayor, Mandla Chiya for doing an excellent job as acting mayor.

“We need to sharpen the tools of service delivery for the municipality to meet the ever increasing demand of water and sanitation. As I understand my main task in this office is to serve the people and to ensure that we turn our municipality around to respond to the demands of our people.”

He said even though there are challenges of ageing infrastructure, illegal water connections, loadshedding and an increase in demand for water, the municipality has provided its community with 70% of clean drinking water.
“Issues of performance management must be strengthened and excellence rewarded where it is due, and also consequence management where necessary.”

Mqadi thanked his political party and other political leaders for making the inauguration day easy without squabbles.

Currently RNM has no mayor and the ruling party has not started with the process to elect one.
In 2021 RNM had a number of challenges and postponed the election of the mayor a few times before Mqadi was elected.

Last week in a statement, the spokesperson for RNM, Simon April confirmed that the deputy mayor, Sibusiso Shange will take over all mayoral responsibilities until a new mayor is elected.
