Paul scoops top technician award
He will now represent South Africa in Japan later in the year.
From a young age, Paul de Beer discovered that he enjoyed working with his hands, especially anything automotive, which involved problem-solving.
Paul has worked at Garden City Motors Shelly Beach as a qualified diesel technician since 2016 and has been with the company since 2014. He has experience in both commercial and non-commercial vehicles. He is also a qualified Mercedes Benz systems and Mitsubishi diagnostics passenger technician.
Recently, Paul entered the Mitsubishi Technician of the Year competition, where he was one of hundreds of entrants from across South Africa. His first round consisted of theory, and he sailed through to the top 20.
Having his appendix removed during round two didn’t stop him. He wrote a second theory test and made it into the top five.
In March, Paul attended the finals in Johannesburg, where he had to complete eight practical tests which consisted of fault-finding in Mitsubishi vehicles and a theory test. He was declared the winner and will now represent South Africa in the Global Service Skills contest in Japan later this year.
Born in Krugersdorp, Paul moved to the South Coast at the age of five. He attended both Suid-Natal Primary and Suid-Natal High schools.
“I love my job, and no one day is the same. It is an honour that people trust me with their vehicles. Being a technician gives me the utmost satisfaction to be able to go out to a stranded customer, day or night, to assist them get to their destination. I look forward to my trip to Japan and thank Garden City Motors for giving me this opportunity and my family for trusting and supporting me,” he said.
When not working on vehicles, Paul loves spending time with family and friends and pursuing outdoor activities.
