Man in court for teen’s rape
The family said they are traumatised and wish for justice to prevail.
A man from Mtwalume appeared in the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape of a minor on Monday this week.
It is alleged that the incident occurred earlier in the year while a 13 year old girl was on her way to school during heavy rains
A relative who does not wish to be named said the girl had been walking alone to school and on her return home told her family that someone had tried to snatch her.
“The child eventually told her family that she had been raped. They are traumatised and wish for justice to prevail.”
Nompumelelo Blose of Women of Mtwalume, a non-profit said they marched to court to show their support because they have had enough of abuse of children and women.
“We are against child abuse and we have to fight it.”
Blose said the police have been slow with the investigation and not prioritising the case, hence the reason they decided to go to court.
She stressed that parents and guardians should have an open relationship with their children so that if anything happens to them, they are able to tell them.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the accused was denied bail and the matter was postponed to January 9, 2024.
