Police round up 10 000 suspects in KZN

Some 192 people were arrested for rape, and 210 were locked-up for house robbery, business robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances and carjacking.

During KZN police operations in January, some 10 070 suspects were arrested for various crimes. Also, 258 firearms, including 24 rifles and 2 796 rounds of ammunition were recovered and seized.

The search for suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes was intensified, and 190 suspects were arrested in connection with murder, and an additional 232 were nabbed for attempted murder. Some 192 people were arrested for rape, and 210 were locked-up for house robbery, business robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances and carjacking.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said 1 528 suspects were arrested for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. “With regards to cases of common assault, 598 suspects were also put behind bars. The protection of women and children was also prioritised and 190 people were arrested for the transgression of Protection Orders.”

Netshiunda said for drugs-related crimes, 1 591 suspects were removed from society. Also, 321 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and 574 were arrested for dealing in illegal liquor. With regards to stock theft, 70 cattle, 31 goats and 66 sheep were recovered by police.

Provincial operations and other targeted operations continue and police appeal to community members to alert them to criminal activities and other lawlessness.
