Three arrested in connection with Lusikisiki mass murder
The recent arrests were made after a tip-off from a community member.
Three suspects linked to the murder of 18 people in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape were arrested by police in Port Shepstone in the early hours of Wednesday last week.
The victims, mostly women, were gunned down in Ngobozana village in Lusikisiki last month. The motive is unknown.
An intelligence-led operation by the Port Shepstone K9 and Public Order Policing officers tracked down and arrested the men.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police received a tip-off from a community member that the men were hiding in rented accommodation at Mkholombe informal settlement.
“A swift operation was put in motion, and the three, aged 22, 24 and 31, were arrested,” he said.
Netshiunda said the operation is ongoing, with police searching for a firearm which the men allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
A fourth man, Siphosoxolo Myekethe (45), was arrested at his home in Mthimde Location, Mamfengwini Area, in Lusikisiki on October 7.
He appeared in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application but decided not to apply for bail.
Myekethe was out on parole for the murder of a police officer during a robbery in 2000.
He now faces 18 counts of murder and one count of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
