8 tips to keep your cash safe

Police urge the public to be more aware of criminals this holiday season.

The festive season is almost here, and fraudsters and criminals are aware it’s time for bonuses and stokvel payouts.

Here are eight tips from the Saps on how to keep your cash safe:

1. Do not ask for help from strangers at ATMs.

2. Always cover your PIN even if you are alone at the ATM.

3. Be cautious of notifications that you have won a competition if you did not enter. Do not respond with any personal information.

4. Carry as little cash as possible. Use alternative banking methods such as cellphone or internet banking.

5. Do not display money in public.

6. Keep your handbag and wallet safe. Wear your handbag across your chest and zipped up if possible. Do not at any time leave your handbag in the trolley while shopping.

7. Arrange for stokvel savings to be deposited directly into your bank account instead of having large amounts of cash on your person or at home.

8. Keep the date and amount of your stokvel withdrawal confidential. Have someone reliable accompany you if it is necessary to make cash withdrawals.
