Pensioner convicted of rape of child (9)

The elderly man was declared unfit to possess a firearm and remained in police custody throughout his trial.

A 60-year-old man will spend nearly a decade in prison for the rape of a nine-year-old child.

Mandla Robert Malinga of Mpakeni area in Bhomela was sentenced to nine years in the Ezinqoleni Regional Court last month.

He was convicted of the rape of the child in November 2021. His details will be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offenders and the National Child Protection Register, making him unfit to work with children.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and remained in police custody throughout his trial.

The investigating officer in the case was Detective Constable Thembile Sengane of the Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
