Two dead in Margate shooting

Police are investigating cases of murder and an inquest following the shooting.

A woman and a man, Simone Sania Naidoo (31) and Bruce Shangase (31) died in a shooting incident in Margate in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

According to reports, a man heard gunshots from a nearby flat on Varley Road at about 05:00. On his investigation, he noticed an injured woman and called police and an ambulance.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Police are investigating cases of murder and an inquest after an incident in which a woman was allegedly shot and killed by a suspect known to her, who was also found dead at the same house with a gun next to his body.”

Naidoo was a teacher at St Martin De Porres School in Port Shepstone.

According to her uncle and family spokesperson, Jaya Pillay, she did not deserve to be murdered.

“The family is absolutely devastated by her untimely death and request that they be allowed to grieve. The perpetrator of the crime was unknown to her family, ” he added.

Naidoo was born in Ladysmith and matriculated from Ladysmith Secondary School. She graduated with a B.Ed degree from Unisa in 2023 and was currently studying towards a postgraduate qualification.

At first, she was employed at RA Engar Primary as an SGB teacher, but in May 2023 was appointed as a state paid teacher at St Martin’s.

“She loved her learners and would go out of her way to make them feel special and loved. She was a humble, pleasant, jovial and fun-loving person. She was kind-hearted and full of compassion towards the poor and downtrodden in society,” said Pillay.

Naidoo lived with her grandparents in Marburg and would spend weekends and holidays with the Pillays. After she obtained a permanent teaching post, she acquired an apartment in Margate.

Shangase’s family could not be reached for further comment.
