Good Samaritans save Archie the Maltese
To this day, there is no rational explanation as to how Archie ended up swimming in the mighty Mzimkhulu River.
Lucky to be alive is Archie, a Maltese poodle from Raspberry Lane in Umtentweni.
Archie’s owner, Nikki Gildenhuys, was overseas when her little dog somehow escaped from his home during the early hours of the morning recently.
Archie was being looked after by Nikki’s friend, Albert Firmani.
A frantic search started, and by that afternoon, Archie was still missing.
Meanwhile, an ‘otter’ was seen by skipper John Williams of Umzimkulu River Cruises, and on closer inspection and to his alarm, it was a little black dog swimming in the Mzimkhulu River.
The elderly Maltese was picked up and taken to Spillers Wharf and handed to Marius Aucamp, the caretaker of Spillers, and then, the story of the ‘saved doggie’ started spreading.
Albert was called to identify him, and indeed, it was Archie from Raspberry Lane.
“He was reunited with the rest of the family later that day but was clearly in shock. To this day, there is no rational explanation as to how Archie ended up swimming in the mighty Mzimkhulu River. But thank heavens for the Good Samaritans who saved his life,” said Nikki.
