Cable thief nabbed in Marburg
Two men were arrested for possession of copper wire and copper pipes.
Lions Grove residents have welcomed the arrest of an alleged cable thief who has left Indira and Seaview roads in the dark for many days.
He was arrested by alert response officer Sbu Cele from Mi7 Security in Marburg recently.
Cele was on patrol in the Marburg industrial area when he came across a man carrying a heavy bag. While questioning him, he noticed copper wire in the bag.
The man was questioned further as to where he got it from, and Cele was given different answers. It is believed he also offered the response officer a bribe.
“There have been numerous cases of Eskom cable theft in the Lions Grove area recently. This suspect could be linked to all these cases as a huge amount of copper was found in his possession,” said Cele.
The suspect was taken to Port Shepstone Saps, where he was arrested.
In a second incident on the same day, Cele was conducting his regular patrols on Industrial Road when he came across another suspicious individual near a scrap metal business.
When the man saw him, he dropped a packet containing copper pipes and fled. Cele picked up the packet, gave chase and arrested him. On being questioned, the man did not want to tell the response officer where he got the copper pipes from and was taken to Port Shepstone Saps for further questioning.
Port Shepstone Saps confirmed the arrest of two men, aged 33 and 51. Two separate cases of possession of presumably stolen property were opened for investigation.
The men appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday last week, and the matter had been postponed for further investigation.
They remain in police custody.
